Challenge Cup Semi final – 10th March 2019
The young Robins travelled to Bubwith for the Challenge Cup semi final, and what a game it turned out to be!
The final stages of the season is certainly bringing out the best from the team, after knocking out Colton in the last round, the young robins were up against Yorkshire Amateurs who are still in the County Cup and Leeds District Cup later stages, so this was another tough test for Selby Town U16s.
Having not played for a few weeks the Robins were looking to maintain there recent good form and get into their second cup final of the season. Amateurs started the match more positively and took an early lead with a tidy finish in the corner. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Reds for a period and not long after that Amateurs went on to score again. A lovely move down the right resulted in another accomplished finish which the diving Precious could do little about. It took being 2-0 down for Town to start playing and slowly but surely they got themselves back into the game. The football started to flow and they had a couple of half chances after some smart play and longs shots from just outside the area.
On the stroke of halftime the Robins scored and reduced the deficit. Some terrific wing play down the left by Hymers who got to the byline, pulled it back for Braybrooke to smash it home. 2-1.
Towns second and the match’s equaliser came just after the break. After a fine passing move the ball was taken on by Smith who, after some tricky footwork, was brought down in the area. Penalty. Smith picked himself up and after a duel with the Amateurs keeper, won the mind games and smashed Selby level. Selby were now in the ascendancy with Braybrooke hitting the post and unbelievably Precious hitting the bar with goal kick. Then, against the run of play, the Amateurs scored again leaving it all to do for the Town. It would have been easy for Town to be disheartened at this point but to the teams credit they kept going again looking for an equaliser. This came with around 10 minutes of the match left thanks to another great Braybrooke strike across the goalkeeper into the far corner. 3-3.
Towns spirit within the squad was really showing now culminating in the last minute when after some great play down the right, Braybrooke crossed for Dutton who controlled the ball on his thigh before tucking the ball past the keeper for a last minute winner!! 4-3. A pulsating match with Town getting their just deserts and a place in the Cup final.
Coaches comments: ‘We showed great team spirit especially after conceding two early goals and then going 3-2 down in the last 10 minutes after dominating the run of play. This is our second final of the season, but we must now concentrate on the final two league games as the top of the league is very close and could go all the way to the last week of the season to be decided’.
Selby Town remaining fixtures are both at home against Kellingley, which is scheduled to play Thursday 14th March, 7.15 KO (weather and pitch conditions depending) and then against Yorkshire Amateurs on Sunday 17th March, 10.30 KO. Hoping to see a good crowd at the Fairfax to support the young robins.
