County Cup – 6th January 2019
Selby Town U16s 1 Colton Juniors 3
The first game of 2019 doesn’t get much tougher than the County Cup tie against Colton (Leeds). These two teams met 3 weeks ago in the league fixture where the young robins came out winners in a closely contested game.
The young robins set up the same formation with a 3-5-2 against Coltons 4-4-1-1 with a view to try and get a foot hold in midfield, where Colton’s strengths are. Selby Town couldn’t of asked for a better start with early possession and after a clever short corner catching Colton off guard, Braybrooke blasted the ball from just outside the 18 yard corner over the keeper and it was an early advantage for Town.
Colton soon showed why they are the league leaders with some high tempo passing football and began to pressure the town’s goal. Colton were awarded a corner on 18 mins, and a clearance header found an unmarked Colton player at the back post who hit the ball through a busy box into the Selby goal.
Selby found it difficult to get any momentum going at this point and 5 minutes later a mix up at the back allowed Colton to fire home a 2-1 lead going into the interval.
The second half started better as Town tried to find a away back into the game but in doing so were always open at the back, and if it wasn’t for Town’s young hero keeper Charlie Precious who pulled off same great save it could of been game over.
At 2-1,Town were always in the game though, but with injuries to players they struggled to find any momentum in the later stages except for a few half chances. Colton rounded off a great display of football after a mix up at the back and a Colton player got behind the Town defence and headed the ball home to make it 3-1 to Colton.
Coaches: “A disappointing start to 2019 and disappointing to go out of the Junior County Cup, but we need to pick ourselves up for next week’s away league fixture to Horsforth and still have the semi final of the District Cup to concentrate on as well as the League Cup tie, so still plenty to play for.”
