Pre – Season 2018/2019
The Eric Lawton Cup
Selby Town 1 Goole AFC 0
The crowd boosted by a large following of Goole fans, witnessed a strangely low key game, which saw The Robins win the Eric Lawton Cup.
In a first half, of necessity, punctuated by drinks breaks, both sides struggled to achieve any fluency to their play on the bone dry pitch. The visitor’s midfield was generally on top but they found it hard to create clear cut chances. When they did have a sight of goal, Goole were not quite clinical enough to take advantage. Goole did manage to get their centre forward Law, one on one with Peter Lawrie in the Selby Goal. However, Town were grateful for an intervention by Ryan Gothard, which snuffed out the chance.
For their part The Robins were struggling to make their own chances. They had a couple of set pieces which caused Montgomery, in the Goole net, no problems. He was forced into a smart save from a Garry Collier shot, after good work out wide by new signing Josh Berry.
Half time arrived goalless with both sets of fans hoping for better in the second half.
The second half duly arrived but with little difference to the general pattern of play. Selby did seem to be playing with more urgency, and looked more threatening as they fed their charging front three with balls over the top of the Goole defence.
Just after the hour mark The Robins finally achieved the breakthrough that their second half play just about deserved. In keeping with the game, it was a scrappy goal, with the ball ricocheting in the six yard box before finding the back of the net. The goal was credited to Gary Collier in the ground, but there was the distinct suspicion that, the ball came last off an unfortunate Goole defender. Either way, Gary Collier was not over anxious to claim the credit for the goal.
Goole roared back in an attempt to get back on level terms. Peter Lawrie made an excellent save to fingertip a goal bound shot onto the post. Poor control let a Goole forward down as he bore down on the Selby goal.
As Goole pressed forward it was inevitable that they would leave gaps at the back, with Selby’s forwards sometimes being overeager to exploit the space in behind the visitors defence. Sam Cable headed the ball home only to be called back by the Assistant Referee’s flag.
As both sides visibly slowed in the heat, The Robins held on to claim the Eric Lawton Cup. Both sides were glad to receive some bottles, which doubtless would need to be well chilled before opening.
Selby continue their pre-season on Tuesday evening, with a match against another local adversary, Tadcaster Albion.
